Removal of persistent organic contaminants from wastewater using a hybrid electrochemical-granular activated carbon (GAC) system

A three-dimensional (3D) electrochemical flow-through reactor equipped with GAC packed bed, polarized by the electric field, was evaluated for removal of persistent organic contaminants from real sewage effluent. The performance investigated 27 consecutive runs at two anodic current densities, i.e., low density (LCD) 15 m-2, and high (HCD) 100 m-2. In HCD experiments, adsorption ability saturated increased, mainly due to increase in mesoporosity GAC. synergy between electrosorption/adsorption on electrooxidation observed terms all target pollutants. DEET presented highest synergy, ranging 40-57%, followed iopromide (22-46%), carbamazepine (15-34%) diatrizoate (4-30%). addition decreased concentrations toxic chlorate perchlorate 2-fold 10-fold, respectively, their electrosorption Also, 3D system yielded lower adsorbable iodide (AOI) chlorine (AOCl). Thus, amounts systems may be a low-cost simple way minimizing formation final effluent halogenated byproducts.
